Roof conversions aren’t just limited to residential properties – they can also be used for commercial spaces such as warehouses or neglected factories to transform them into liveable homes.

There are four types of loft conversions:

Roof Light Loft Conversion

Roof light conversions don’t include additional spaces in your home, but they do allow you to add windows to turn your loft space into a more comfortable and usable area. This type of conversion is more affordable and easier to gain approval for, but it does require a minimum of 2.25m of head height in the middle to allow for a safe amount of space for the floor build up.

Mansard Loft Conversion

Mansard conversions are usually used on terraced houses as they’re constructed by raising the shared wall with the neighbouring property. They’re usually found at the rear of the property and blend in well with older style houses. With this style, the roof remains flat while the outer wall slopes gently inwards, adding more headroom and better lighting.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversion

Ideal for end-of-terraced homes or detached properties, hip to gable conversions create a vertical wall by straightening an inwardly slanted end roof. This form of conversion creates a small but significant change that dramatically impacts the interior of your home, maximising space and working well with rear dormers.

Dormer Loft Conversions

This style of conversion is a simple flat roof dormer, an extension from the slope of the existing roof which projects a box shape. This is the most affordable of all four styles and increases the amount of internal space and light.

Is My Loft or Attic Suitable for a Conversion?

Not every home will be eligible for a roof conversion, so there are a few factors to consider before beginning the process. These include:

  • > Head height: The available height must be greater than 2.2m
  • > Roof pitch: The higher the roof pitch angle, the higher the available head height needs to be
  • > Roof structure: The structure needs to be either a traditional framed or truss section type.
  • > Obstacles: Are there chimney stacks or water tanks that could impact the conversion?
